Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

Building a truly inclusive community takes consistent work, honest reflection and a willingness to grow together. While we’re proud of our efforts to date, we know our work is not done. Diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) are part of how we show up every day in every part of school life — just as our founder, Margaret Chadwick, intended.

We approach this work with humility and persistence. We listen to students, learn from each other and stay committed to making Chadwick a place where everyone feels seen, respected and valued for who they are.

“A strong feeling of belonging to each other and of belonging to the whole family develops, and once a child has grasped the concept of ‘we’ as meaning ‘old and young, rich and poor, of every color and all nations,’ they have found themselves at home in the world.”

Margaret Chadwick, 1963

Diversity Statement

Chadwick seeks to develop and enhance in our students the knowledge, skills and empathic orientation required to understand multiple perspectives and to thrive and lead in an increasingly interconnected world.

How DEIB Shows Up at Chadwick

Real progress is made when it appears every day. At Chadwick, it’s in the way we treat others, in the spaces we create with intention and in the traditions we celebrate.

Some of the important ways we see DEIB work show up at Chadwick include:

Affinity Groups

These student- and faculty-led groups foster connection and leadership development.

Some of our past and present student affinity groups include:

  • Black Student Union
  • LGBTQ+ Affinity Group
  • First-Generation American Affinity Group
  • Latinos Unidos
  • Asian American Affinity Group
  • Middle Eastern Affinity Group
  • Multiracial Affinity Group
  • Jewish Affinity Group
  • Muslim Student Association
  • Buddhist Affinity Group
  • Christian Affinity Group
  • Black Girl Magic
  • Ability Affinity Group
Social Justice Day

Chadwick's Social Justice Day is held annually in the spring. Throughout the day, Chadwick's community members engage in meaningful and hands-on learning through cultural performances, workshops, inspirational guest speakers and student speakers — a testament to our Mission to develop global citizens. Highlights of the day include the sharing of unique experiences and perspectives — aligning perfectly with our Core Values of compassion, fairness, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Multicultural Food Festival

Chadwick's Multicultural Food Festival is celebrated every spring. This vibrant event was ideated and is organized annually by our students. It gives attendees an opportunity to experience food and cultures from diverse regions and backgrounds at various booths. Festive decorations and delicious dishes from Filipino, Black, Korean, Mexican, Middle Eastern and Danish cultures — and more — give the Chadwick community a true taste of diversity.

Bus Stop Meet-and-Greets

During the fall, our Head of School, Assistant Head of School, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and leaders from the Board of Trustees and the Chadwick Parents Association host Bus Stop Meet-and-Greets at some of Chadwick's morning stops. It’s a great way for our leadership teams to get out into our neighborhoods and meet Chadwick families who might not have the opportunity to visit campus.

Chadwick's Equity Team

Bringing expertise from multiple areas of our operations, Chadwick’s Equity Team assists, supports and advises the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in advancing and implementing programs, policies, practices and procedures in the areas of wellness, admission, hiring practices, curriculum and communications, among other operational areas.
