An Introduction to Independence
In sixth grade, children are beginning to figure out who they are — an experience that can be both exciting and challenging! We have a deep understanding of life in the sixth grade, and our program helps each Sixer develop their independence and explore their sense of self and personal values. It’s a year of many important firsts — a time when Sixers begin building a strong foundation in organizing their time, their materials and their thinking. Leadership and character skills are taught and then applied, as each Sixer leads a Village School “family” of students from each K-5 grade level throughout the school year. Sixers also learn to build healthy, positive relationships and are encouraged and guided by a faculty and peer Advisory Group that meets weekly. This support network helps them work through the emotional, organizational and friendship challenges that are part of adolescence. By the time sixth graders at Chadwick approach the end of their school year, they’re prepared to enter Middle School confident and ready to dive into their next challenge. |

“Teachers organized every part of the Mission to Mars project, and I had freedom to make it my own experience. Even if our team’s lander or rocket failed, we’d learn and move on to make it better next time.”
Cole, Sixer

“Joy and self-discovery are a vital part of the experience, and it's a safe space for our Sixers to explore and grow”
